Where did Osteopathic Medicine begin?
Osteopathy originated in Missouri, USA by Dr Alexander Still, after being disillusioned by the then, medical approach, to disease. It failed in curing three of his children of meningitis. This failure spured him on to research for many years.
He postulated that the body had an innate ability to heal itself given the correct alignment of the spinal joints and correct blood supply. In 1874 he gave his manual medicine the name Osteopathy. His original school still flourishes today in Missouri. Osteopathy is now practiced worldwide.
